MISSION
Denton County Public Health in partnership with the City of Lewisville Parks and Recreation, is hosting the 4th annual “Denton County Dash” 5K/1M Fun Run/Walk. The purpose of this event is to promote awareness of cardiovascular health and emphasize the importance of becoming and staying active in order to prevent heart disease. This event will take place on Saturday, April 11, 2020 at Lone Star Toyota of Lewisville Railroad Park.
Heart disease is the second leading cause of death in Denton County. Many of the risk factors contributing to the development of heart disease are preventable, including: obesity, poor diet, physical inactivity, smoking, high blood pressure and cholesterol. Approximately 35% of Denton County adults and 27% of children are classified obese, and 18% of residents report to be physically inactive. Congruently, Denton County residents have a high prevalence of obesity and physical inactivity compared to neighboring county residents. Through various interviews and focus groups, Denton County residents indicated a great need for recreation and fitness opportunities in the built environment. Denton County DASH aims to bridge this gap between the high prevalence of preventable factors of heart disease and the promotion of healthy behaviors to proactively encourage Denton County residents to become active and aware of cardiovascular health.
